Pursue Your Education
During Residency, a friend of mine decided to go back to school and finish her undergraduate degree. It was really hard for her to raise four children, support a spouse in residency, and go to school full-time, but it really mattered to her and she made it work. Other resident spouses have expressed the same value for them to go back to or finish school while their spouse was in medical training.
We are so fortunate to live in a world where we have access to almost everything we could want to learn from our very own home. There are many free online independent study courses that teach different skills and hobbies like gardening, genealogy, financial planning and foreign languages.
Almost every university now offers some online degree. Even if there is not a university close to you or you do not have the flexibility with young children to attend full time, online may be a great option.

Before I really knew what I wanted to be when I grew up, I thought I wanted to be a nurse so I took a medical terminology class in high school. It’s funny how much that class has come in handy in my marriage. It really helps for me to understand my husband’s medical jargon when he tells me about his day. Even if I don’t know words he is using, I can often figure it out without having to stop him and ask. Even something like that is available online for relatively little cost or free.
This doesn’t have to be formal education either. You could enroll in a local choir because you love to sing and want to improve, take a painting class or learn a new trade. One woman spent a couple of days training to do eyelash extensions and now uses that for extra income. The possibilities are really endless. Continue Reading
